Symbolism
Scarlet and white are the colors used for Engineers.  The spade, a basic engineer tool, refers to the basic mission of the organization.  The two battle axes, assault weapons during the Middle Ages, refer to service in Central Europe in World War II and also to the organizations combat readiness.  The spade and axes also allude to the motto, Ready To Build Or Fight.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 16 October 1968.
